Peace Camp Brightened by Floodlights

Submitted by Matt de Nesnera on Saturday, August 21st, 1:58 pm

At dusk, Santa Cruz police fire up floodlights in front of City Hall, illuminating what's left of Peace Camp 2010.

Authorities installed the lighting earlier this week citing public safety concerns, particularly after a convicted sex offender, who failed to register with police, was arrested here.

"When you've got a child molester out there who's on the run from the law -- he had several outstanding warrants from San Luis Obispo County -- it really takes this to a new level in terms of safety," said Santa Cruz deputy police chief Kevin Vogel.

The homless and their advocates are protesting the city's sleeping ordinances and, in the past, they have asked for amnesty for all sleeping tickets dating back to the late 1970's.

People Protest Immigration Law In Santa Cruz

Submitted by Nailen on Friday, July 30th, 5:50 pm

People from all over the country are protesting the immigration law which took effect in Arizona Thursday.  Dozens of people marched through Santa Cruz with signs held high and speaker box in hand.  Marciano Cruz showed up because he's afraid of what this law will do to illegal immigrants and their families.

"Separation.  I know what a separation is like for a family and I know how it feels, trying to be separated from your kids," said Marciano Cruz.

That seemed to be the biggest issue, but it's certainly not the only one.  Jaque Aguado said the law clearly shows racial profiling and it's unfair.

"We're just not the only illegal people; there are Chinese people, African American.  There's a lot of whole bunch of immigrants here not just Mexicans," said Jaque Aguado.

Santa Cruz Sleep-Out: 19 Days and Counting

Submitted by Nailen on Friday, July 23rd, 12:59 pm

A group of activists and the homeless have been camped out at the Santa Cruz county courthouse for 19 days, and they say they have no plans to leave.

They're calling it Peace Camp 2010.  About 30 people are camping out to protest the city's sleeping bans, and organizers say their numbers are growing.

Even though they're rallying against city laws, they are technically on county property.

City officials have said they can't enforce their ordinances there, and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office has no enforcement plans, either.

Organizers say they are trying to make a point, and it doesn't matter if it's on city property or not.

"We're trying to protest the problem and demonstrate the solution," said activist Christoper Doyon.  He said they can provide a cheap and safe place to sleep.
