Knife Wielding Man Resists Arrests in Santa Cruz

News Release From Santa Cruz Police

 

On Aug 31, 2010, at approximately 5:40 pm, Santa Cruz Police Department officers responded to the area of West Cliff Drive and John St. for a report of a male suspect armed with a knife chasing after two victims.

Prior to our arrival, the suspect had fled the scene in his truck. An officer located the suspect standing outside his truck in the area of West Cliff Drive and Almar.

The suspect, identified as Adam Roberts, refused to comply with the officer's commands and proceeded to and drove away. Mr. Roberts drove one block, jumped out of his truck, and fled on foot.

Mr. Roberts ran through several yards and jumped over several fences in an attempt to evade officers.

Birthday Party Magician Lands 6 Years in Prison

BOULDER CREEK, Calif-  A 27 year-old Father of two, who met his victim at a child's bithday party, was sentenced to 6 years in state prison for child molestation.

Shane Wright was porforming magic tricks at a 13 year-old girl's party when he met the 12 year-old victim and began to pursue a sexual relationship with her. According to the District Attorney's Office, Wright also encouraged the victim to seek emancipation from her parents.

The victim's mother found what she discribed as disturbing text messages from Wright to the victim and called the police.

Judge Paul Marigonda ruled that Wright's failure to recognize the wrongfulness of actions, his prior history, and unconventional vagabond lifestyle rendered Wright an unsuitable candidate for probation.

Seaside Street Shooting

Late Friday night, Santa Cruz police were investigating a shooting between two vehicles off Seaside Street and Bellevue Street.

According to officials, it was a moving incident between two cars.

Police said one victim was shot, but the injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Fifth Suspect Identified in Santa Cruz Teen's Murder

Santa Cruz Police identified a fifth suspect in the murder of 17-year-old Tyler Tenori. 

On Wednesday, police said evidence at the crime scene linked Ivan Ramirez to the murder.  Investigators think Ramirez is living in southern California, but have not found him there.

Tenorio was killed in October outside a 7-11 in Santa Cruz.  Police said a group of suspected gang members started shouting gang slogans at Tenorio and then stabbed him.

They've already arrested Walter Escalante, Pasqual Reyes and Daniel Onesto in connection to the murder.  Investigators are also looking for Paulo Luna.  They think he may be hiding in Mexico.

Woman is dead; Boyfriend Jailed Accused of Killing Her

Santa Cruz, Calif.  A woman is dead and her boyfriend is behind bars after police were called to their house for a domestic violence report.   Officers respond to the couples house on the 300 block of Morrissey Boulevard around 4:08 AM. Witnesses told police that a woman was bleeding after she had been attacked. Police found the 41 year-old victim lying on the living room apartment with her throat slit. Medical personal tried to revive the victim but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the victim's boyfriend, Wensy Sanchez, was sitting down near the body.

Santa Cruz Child Killer Could be Released

There is new controversy brewing over what to do with a Santa Cruz man convicted of sodomizing and killing a 3-year-old girl.

Donald Schmidt, 38, has been behind bars since he was 16.  In the late '90s, he was convicted as a juvenile and placed under the California Youth Authority. 

He has fought for release ever since; and juries recently couldn't reach a decision over parole.  According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, the Santa Cruz District Attorney approved a deal that gives Schimdt parole for 3 years.   

The DA's office reportedly didn't want to take a chance on a third jury.

Apparently, the state wants to put Schmidt in a home in Riverside County, but politicians and neighbors are not happy with the plan.

Additionally, Schmidt would not have to register as a sex offender because the sodomy conviction was later overturned.

3 Arrested after Marijuana Cultivation Found in Warehouse

LIVE OAK, Calif- Santa Cruz Sheriff's detectives uncovered a large scale commercial marijuana cultivation and sales operation at a warehouse in Live Oak.

Deputies initially responded to the warehouse for an alarm call when they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the warehouse. 

Deputies arrested 26 year-old Darrel Madison and 25 year-old Anthony Ott in connection with the marijuana grow operation. There is one additional suspect on the loose.

State Supreme Court Declines to Review Neighbor Feud Gun Rights Case from the Santa Cruz Mountains

According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, a Santa Cruz Mountains woman faces a 60-day jail sentence for a 2007 gun brandishing conviction after the state Supreme Court denied her petition for a new trial earlier this month.

BC Couple pleads guilty in molestation case

According to Press-Banner.com, a Boulder Creek couple arrested on charges connected to the molestation of a child in their care pleaded guilty in court this week.

Ronald Eugene McDougal, 53, faces up to 17 years, eight months in state prison for the long-term sexual abuse and intimidation of the girl, who was 11 when he first molested her, according to Assistant District Attorney Andrew Isaac, who prosecuted the case.

Oldest youth inmate soon to be released

According to Press-Banner.com, sometime in the next several weeks, Donald Gerald Schmidt, the oldest inmate in the California Youth Authority system, will likely learn when and where he will be released.

Schmidt, now 38, was convicted as a 17-year-old in 1988 of sodomizing and drowning 3-year-old Mariah Sivola in Lompico the year before. He has been imprisoned as a minor since.
